Computer scientists from Durham University have found a way that violent video games can be used to train people in fire safety and fire safety games potentially save lives at work.
Commercial games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2 can be used to build virtual worlds to train people in evacuation procedures in case of fire, using the software code of the game is based, according to researchers at the University of Durham fire safety games. " Real" buildings such as offices and factories could be created and users would be able to practice against emergencies.
A 3D model of a real building and three fire evacuation scenarios were programmed in three weeks by a single developer fire safety games, complete with smoke and fire. The Durham experts say it is much faster and more cost effective than using traditional boxes or virtual reality tools to write code from scratch.
The results were published in Fire Safety Journal , which stated that the simulations can identify problems with the design of a building fire safety games to help people become familiar with evacuation routines and teach people good practices in safety fires.
Lead author Dr Shamus Smith, said fire safety games:
"Although virtual environments are available toolkits usually provide a subset of the tools needed to build complete virtual worlds. Though you can create fire and smoke, for example, is very simple.
"In order to include these features using tools often requires additional programming skills and a significant investment of time by the developer fire safety games.
" By using available computer games , these functions can be easily simulated and are obviously vital in creating a scenario of virtual fire evacuation."
